Rights of children: body points out gaps in system

Ahmedabad: The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has pointed out gaps in the existing facilities with regard to the rights of children. NCPCR chairperson Prof Shantha Sinha made the observations after a visit to Kutch district where a large number of children are employed in the salt industry. She said: “Children are exposed to sunlight and corrosive substances. We have raised these issues and there are schemes,but there is a mismatch between the extent and the supplies.” She was accompanied by Dinesh Laroria,Ministry of Women and Child Development,Smita,Director,Education Programs,American India Foundation on the tour.

Trains rescheduled due to Gurjjar stir

Ahmedabad: Owing to the Gurjjar agitation at various places in Rajasthan,14 long-distance trains on Western Railway that were scheduled to depart on Tuesday were diverted and would arrive 6 to 8 hours late at their destinations. Similarly,three trains have been rescheduled and two have been short-terminated. Meanwhile,all main line trains departing from Mumbai till afternoon of Wednesday will depart at their scheduled time,except 9023 Mumbai Central-Firozpur Janta Express which is rescheduled to depart at 2.20 pm.

Murder accused dies in Rajkot jail

Rajkot: A 43-year-old murder accused died in the district jail,police said on Tuesday. The incident occurred last night,police said. Vinu Makwana had woken up in the middle of the night to drink and police suspect that he might have died after his head hit a wall. Makwana was found unconscious and was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was declared ‘dead on arrival’,they said adding his body has been sent for autopsy. Makwana was the prime accused of the murder of Mota Mauva’s sarpanch.
