Inflation likely to fall soon: Montek
VADODARA: The prevailing high inflation is likely to ease in the near future following the steps taken by the policymakers and on the back of falling commodity prices,Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said on Friday.
“Steps are being taken to contain inflation. Food inflation has started falling and within two months prices of various commodities, including wheat and rice, would fall further,” he said at a function here.
Food inflation eased for the second consecutive week to 16.04 per cent while fuel inflation remained unchanged at 12.69 per cent. The WPI-based inflation is still hovering close to 10 per cent, way above the RBI’s comfort level.
Ahluwalia said the distribution of five lakh tonne food grain to BPL cardholders is meant to control the prices of essential commodities. Referring to the recent RBI action to check the runaway inflation,Ahluwalia said these steps will also help to bring down inflation. In April, the RBI hiked its key rates and cash reserve ratio by 0.25 per cent to fight skyrocketing inflation and pegged inflation for FY11 at 5.5 per cent.

CBI arrested just one IPS officer: Modhwadia
AHMEDABAD: Amid allegations of misuse of the CBI by the Centre in its probe into the fake encounters of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, his wife and another person, the state Congress today said that the agency has arrested just one IPS officer.
Modhwadia said that a total of 16 police personnel, including four IPS officers, were arrested in this connection by the state CID (Crime) and only Abhay Chudasama was arrested by the CBI. He said the CBI was conducting the probe on the orders of the Supreme Court and not the UPA government. He added Chudasama was arrested on charges of running an extortion racket and unaccounted wealth had also been recovered during raids at his premises.
He said that national and state BJP leadership appeared to be disturbed as the CBI investigations had entered into the final phases with several political bigwigs likely to be exposed.
Modhawadia wondered what was wrong if these officials were arrested by investigators and why the BJP leaders were getting jittery. As a responsible political party,he said, the BJP should extend cooperation in taking the law its own course rather than putting up obstruction in its path by threatening to launch public agitation against investigations and arrests.
