Godhra verdict: HC admits plea to enhance sentence

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat High Court admitted the appeal of the state government seeking enhancement of sentence of 20 convicts in the 2002 Godhra train burning case from life imprisonment to death. These appeals were filed by Nilkanth Bhatia,who along with his wife was injured in the incident,and Gayatri Panchal,who had lost four of her family members,including her parents and two sisters. A special court in March had convicted 31 people and acquitted 63 others in the train burning case,with death sentence for 11 and life term for 20.

Man ends life after son’s death

AHMEDABAD: The man,whose one-year-old son had died after being hit by a running train at Sola,was found dead in the Narmada Canal on Tuesday night. Mehul Patel had reportedly escaped from the Sola railway tracks where he had gone to commit suicide with his son on Monday. Police said Patel’s body was fished out on Wednesday,adding that preliminary postmortem report stated that he died due to drowning. According to the police,Patel was fed up with daily domestic chaos,which might have forced him to take the extreme step.

AMC demolishes illegal constructions

AHMEDABAD: The special demolition squad of the AMC pulled down illegal construction on the premises of New L J College on S G Highway in Bodakdev ward along with automobile workshop behind the showroom of Hundai motors in GNFC Tower,both covering 3,195 aq metres. The workshop was built in the margin space,said an AMC release on Wednesday. The squad also pulled down 46 row houses covering 11,000 sq ft at two places in Vastral ward and five industrial shed type constructions near Moni Hotel in Isanpur ward. As many as 16 roadside encroachment and 23 kutcha sheds on the periphery of New Civil Hospital were also removed.

Wanted criminals brought to city

AHMEDABAD: The Amraiwadi police on Wednesday brought a wanted accused and his aide from Porbanadar on a transfer warrant who was reportedly involved in a case of assault and bootlegging. Sources said the police had earlier received information that the accused had planned to attack on state Congress president Arjun Modhwadia. But Porbandar DySP Deepen Bhadran said they could get any information during their interrogation.

2 held for vehicle theft

AHMEDABAD: The Ahmedabad Crime Branch on Wednesday busted a gang of photographers and arrested two persons who were reportedly stealing vehicles in the city. Police said the duo used to mainly target Honda Activa. Police seized nine vehicles stolen by them worth Rs 3.60 lakh. They were booked for theft under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
