BBC’s poll train halts in Ahmedabad for 2 days

The British Broadcasting Corporation’s (BBC) India Election Train, led by its Assignment Editor Mark Perrow and a team of 30 journalists, arrived in Ahmedabad on Sunday for its two-day halt here.

This is its second destination of a three-week journey across India. Along its way,the BBC team will investigate stories and personalities involved in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls in the country. The train, coming from Delhi to Ahmedabad, will move on to Mumbai,Hyderabad,Bhubaneshwar,Kolkata,Patna and Allahabad, before returning to the National Capital.

The team travelling with the tag line,Kya India ka vote, chalayega duniya ka note,(Will the elections in India help in recovery of the world economy),will also study India’s response to the current economic crisis.

”Others issues include entrepreneurial culture in Gujarat, impact of globalisation in rural India,India’s economic and security issues,IT industry,e-governance and marginalisation in Andhra Pradesh, the influence of Maoist insurgents in Orissa,India’s youth and their take on the modern world in Bengal and the urban-rural divide, caste wars and organised crimes in politics in UP and Bihar,” Mark said.

The team also includes several international journalists who will investigate some particular issues as well. “Like a Chinese journalist will report on factors responsible for the robust Indian democracy,a Persian journalist will analyse the communal undercurrents during elections and a Somali reporter will focus on development issues,” Mark added.

This is the second such initiative by the BBC. During the presidential elections in the US last year,an American Election Bus undertook a tour of the entire country.
