A metropolitan court has ordered a judicial inquiry into a defamation suit filed by newly appointed Gujarat University vice-chancellor Adesh Pal against Gujarat Congress president Arjun Modhwadia for allegedly making derogatory remarks against him and his family members.

Magistrate PT Patel ordered the inquiry on Saturday under Section 202 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) after verifying the complaint. The court has asked Pal to remain present before it on October 31 when the matter will be heard.

Pal,who took over as V-C on August 31,has based his complaint on a report published in a local daily on September 10. The news report contains a letter of Modhwadia addressed to Chief Minister Narendra Modi in which the former has allegedly described Pal as “characterless”,“corrupt”,and “drunkard”.

In the letter,Modhwadia had allegedly raised objection to the appointment of Pal. According to the newspaper report,Modhwadia had also levelled allegations against Pal’s family, his personal and marital life, which Pal has complained as derogatory.

Pal,who was a professor of English literature at Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University before taking over as GU V-C,has stated that “the language and the content of the letter are really painful”.

In his complaint,Pal has named his wife,son,daughter-in-law and all three members of the search committee as witnesses along with the editor and reporter of the local daily.
