Since December,Amreli has witnessed more than 10 cases of suicide following the closure of the diamond polishing units in the wake of the global meltdown.

The Liliya taluka police said the body of Vijay Koli (21),a resident of Keriyanagas village,was found near a pond on the outskirts of Saladi village on Sunday. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the deceased had consumed some poisonous substance.

According to the police,Koli worked in a diamond unit at Surat till all the units closed down for the Diwali vacations in October 2008.

“Vijay Koli came back to live with his parents at their hometown,in October. He was jobless since then. His parents said that despite efforts,he failed to get another job at his native place,” said Liliya police.

The police further said the deceased left his place on Sunday afternoon on the pretext of playing cricket with his friends. His body was recovered in the evening. His cycle was found near his body,they added.

The recession in the diamond industry claimed another life in Surat on Sunday. A diamond broker committed suicide in the Katargam area by consuming poison.

According to sources,Nitesh Anghan (28),a resident of Narayannagar in Katargam,and a native of Bhavnagar district,was running a diamond brokering business for the last 11 years.

He had purchased diamonds worth lakhs of rupees and had invested his savings to meet the Christmas demand. But due to the global economic meltdown,the demand for diamonds went down and he was unable to meet his sales target.

Nitesh was under severe depression since Diwali and was facing a severe financial crunch.

The police said: “Nitesh tried his utmost to find a job,but failed. He committed suicide at his home on Sunday afternoon. His wife thought that he might be taking rest in the bedroom,but when he did not wake up till evening,she went inside and tried to wake him up. Seeing no movement,she became suspicious and called in the neighbours. Nitesh was immediately taken to SMIMER Hospital,where doctors declared him dead after primary treatment.” More than 30 people associated with the diamond industry have committed suicide in the last few months in Surat.
