For 21 hours, around 130 officers of the Vadodara City Police were on their toes, scouring CCTV camera footage and tapping autorickshaw drivers and food delivery agents for information. All this, not to find a criminal but to trace a 12-year-old, who had “walked away” from his home after his mother rebuked him for being inattentive to studies.

The police found the boy, who was spotted leaving on a cycle from his residence in Lakshmipura on CCTV, outside a popular mall.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Julie Kothiya said the police had set up teams to track down the minor, who had walked away from his home on Tuesday after his mother reportedly admonished him for “being inattentive to studies”.

Kothiya said, “Teams of the Lakshmipura police station as well as seven other police stations of Zone 1, Local Crime Branch of Zone 1, Crime Branch and the Special Operations Group (SOG) were looking for the child. The teams included 8 inspectors, nine sub-inspectors, 120 personnel… The child had also left behind his cellphone…”

The police, Kothiya added, also tapped the autorickshaw association, agents of food delivery platforms and other sources to scan the city.

After being found by the police, the boy said that he had been “roaming around the streets at night with his cycle, unaware of the roads”. The police said the boy had spotted the famous mall in Gorwa and decided to stop by to drink water, when he was spotted on the CCTV.

In his statement, the boy has said that his mother had chastised him for “being inattentive during his tuition classes after scoring low marks” in his recent examinations. The police have referred the boy to a counsellor and reunited him with his parents.
