Eleven members of a head constable’s family were booked on Monday for failing to give the police information about the suicide of the constable.

Gunvant Jhala (56),a head constable with the Ahmedabad police had committed suicide by hanging on Sunday morning. The police said the 11 had carried out Jhala’s last rites in his native village discreetly without informing the authorities.

According to details,Jhala, who was deployed in the Gaekward Haveli police stations in the Walled City Area of Ahmedabad, had recently bought a new house in Madhuvan Society in Phatewadi area in Aslali last month. Jhala was on leave since December 18.

Around 9 am on Sunday he reached home and hanged himself from one of the hooks on the ceiling. Jhala’s family rushed to the house, after being informed about the incident by some of the neighbours. “But instead of informing the police, they took his body to their native village near Dholka. By the time our team reached there, the last rites had been performed,” the Aslali police said.

Jhala’s wife, sons Bhupat and Kanvar and eight others have been booked under Section 176 (Omission to give notice or information to public servant by person legally bound to give it) of the IPC. No one has, however, been arrested till last reports came in on Monday night.
