The Nifty 50 fell 0.37% to 22,860.35 by 9:20 a.m. IST, while the BSE Sensex lost 0.39% to 75,669.22.
Asian equities were mixed in early trading, with the MSCI Asia ex-Japan inching 0.2% lower after Trump said he would impose tariffs on auto, pharmaceuticals and semiconductor imports.
The Nifty pharma index fell 3%, while the auto index declined 0.7%.
All 13 major sectors were trading in negative territory. The broader, more domestically focussed small- and mid-caps fell 0.4% and 0.7%, respectively.
