The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will shortly issue Rs 100 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series, bearing the signature of Governor Urjit Patel. In a press release issued today, the central bank said the new denomination note has motif of ‘RANI KI VAV’ on the reverse, which depicts India’s cultural heritage. Lavender is the base colour of the note. Besides, the banknote has other designs, geometric patterns which align with the overall colour scheme.
“As is normal, when a new design of banknote is introduced, printing and supply of these notes for distribution to public through the banking channel will gradually increase,” said the RBI, which issues currency in the country. The new Rs 100 note follows, new notes in denomination of Rs 10, Rs 50 and Rs 500. Also Read: What’s new in RBI’s latest Rs 100 currency note
Besides, the central bank introduced a Rs 200 note in addition to currency note in denomination of Rs 2,000 after the demonetisation on November 8, 2016. After the introduction of Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes in November-December 2016, ATMs across the country were calibrated on a war footing amid a currency shortage as close to 86 per cent of the currency in circulation was withdrawn in the wake of demonetisation of old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes. The ATM recalibration delayed the supply of notes, creating chaos in bank branches across the country.
