Nissan Micra and Sunny recalled for faulty start/stop buttons

The affected units were manufactured by Nissan at the Renualt-Nissan assembly plant in Oragadam, Tamil Nadu between June 2013 and March 2015.

Nissan has voluntarily recalled 11,601 of its cars sold in India to replace faulty start/stop buttons fitted to these units. The cars recalled include units of both the 2013 Micra and the pre- and post-facelift Sunny.

The affected units were manufactured by Nissan at the Renualt-Nissan assembly plant in Oragadam, Tamil Nadu between June 2013 and March 2015. Nissan states that the malfunctioning start/stop button can cause ‘excessive interference’, but has not clarified on what the exact problem is. It does not seem like the faulty part is a major cause of concern, but it is recommended that owners of the affected units get it rectified as soon as possible. Nissan service centres across the country will contact the owners of the cars that are part of this recall and replace the start/stop button free of cost.

The Nissan Micra is currently priced from Rs. 5.17 lakh to 7.47 lakh, ex-showroom, the company has been able to sell about 600 units of the car across the country every month in the past half-a-year. Meanwhile the new Sunny is priced from Rs. 7.40 lakh to Rs. 10.29 lakh, with about 300+ units sold on an average every month since December 2014. Nissan is struggling to get a good grip in the Indian automotive market; un-competitive pricing and a small service network have really hampered the company’s progress in India. Even though Nissan has been officially operating in the country for about a decade, it doesn’t have even 1 per cent share of the market as per sales figures released in May 2015.

Nissan is betting big on its budget brand, Datsun, to crack the highly competitive mass-market segment in India. The Datsun brand has had relatively better performance since its first product, the Datsun Go hatchback, was launched in March 2014; it has 0.80 per cent market share as of May 2015. While Datsun currently offers the Go hatchback and the Go+ compact-MPV, an entry-level hatchback will join the ranks in 2016. Nissan, on the other hand, is rumoured to launch a compact-SUV based on the 2014 Kicks concept in India sometime in 2016.
