466 SEZ units shut in last 5 years, shows official data

To be sure, exports from the SEZs in the export units during the last 5 years have shown an upward trend. Exports have doubled to Rs 14.63 lakh crore in FY25 compared to Rs 7.59 lakh crore in FY21.

This comes after multiple units in the SEZs, particularly those which entirely cater to the US market, have written to the Commerce Ministry seeking that they be de-notified due to sudden tariff pressure that has left exports uncompetitive in the US market.

The government has amended the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) rules to permit IT/ITeS units in SEZs to allow 100 per cent of their workforce to work from home (WFH) till December 31, 2023 with certain conditions.
