In an appeal heard by the Securities Appellate Tribunal on Thursday, Kudva argued he acted only on public information. SEBI objected to his position, but the tribunal judges decided to put the ban on hold while his appeal his heard.

In an e-mail dated June 8 to investors, Franklin Templeton AMC President Sanjay Sapre said Sebi's order does not impact the current monetization process of the six debt schemes under winding up being undertaken by the liquidator.

On Monday, Sebi barred the fund house from launching any debt scheme for 2 years, and asked it to disgorge Rs 512.5 crore for violation in connection with the shutting down of six debt schemes last year. It has imposed a penalty of Rs 5 crore on the AMC.

Reacting to Sebi's order, a Franklin Templeton spokesperson said, "We strongly disagree with the findings in the Sebi order and intend to file an appeal with the Hon'ble Securities Appellate Tribunal".

The regulator said that Franklin Templeton Mutual Fund has violated the provisions of the Mutual Funds Regulations and also certain Sebi circulars.

This comes following reports of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) issuing show-cause notices to Templeton and its officials with regards to practices around risk management, inter-scheme transfers and personal transactions by employees and management, among others.

The top court had on February 2 ordered that Rs 9,122 crore be disbursed within three weeks to the unit holders of Franklin Templeton's six mutual fund schemes which are proposed to be wound up.
