Brijendra Singh, born on May 13, 1972, is an Indian politician and a Member of Parliament from the Hisar parliamentary constituency. Hailing from Rohtak, Haryana, India, Singh’s native village is Dumarkhan Kalan, near Uchana in Jind district, Haryana.
Belonging to the Jat community, he is the son of former Union Steel Minister Birender Singh, and his mother, Premlata Singh, was a Member of the Legislative Assembly in Haryana, representing the Uchana Kalan constituency, which was previously held by his father.
Before entering politics, Singh served as an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer in Haryana for 21 years. With a BA (Honours) in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, in 1992, an MA in Modern History from Jawaharlal Nehru University, and an MSc in Public Policy and Management from King’s College London, Singh transitioned from bureaucracy to politics.
As an MP, he was a member of parliamentary committees, including the Public Accounts Committee, the Standing Committee on Defence, and the Joint Committee on the Biological Diversity (Amendment) Bill, 2021.
He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the Hisar constituency, winning the seat with 603,289 votes, which accounted for 51.13% of the total votes.
He secured a majority of 314,068 votes over his nearest competitor, Dushyant Chautala of the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), who received 289,221 votes (24.51%).
He recently made headlines for his shift from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to the Indian National Congress on March 10, 2024, just a few months before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, citing “compelling political reasons” for this switch.
