Inspired by Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra, Brijendra Singh — former Hisar MP and Congress leader — is set to embark on a ‘Sadbhav Yatra’ (harmony march) across Haryana starting October 5 this year.
Brijendra Singh currently serves as the vice-chairman of the All India Congress Committee’s (AICC) Foreign Affairs Department. He is the son of former Union Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh.
The padyatra, spanning over 2,600 kilometres over six months, will begin from Danoda village in Jind district and cover 90 assembly constituencies.
In its first phase, the yatra will pass through 14 assembly constituencies: Jind, Narwana, Kalayat, Safidon, Julana, Narnaund, Uchana, Uklana, Adampur, Nalwa, Hisar, Barwala, Hansi and Bawani Khera.
There will be a total of six phases, each lasting approximately one month, sources said.
The yatra’s slogan, “Congress ka Haath, Bhaichaare ke Saath,” aims to unite the people of Haryana in a mission to strengthen social harmony. It resonates with the shared spirit of Haryana’s 36 biradaris (communities).
At a press conference in Chandigarh on Tuesday, the former bureaucrat said in the present day Haryana needs bhaichara more than ever and Congress has always believed in unity. The march is to reclaim the spirit of brotherhood and justice across all 36 biradaris of Haryana, he said.
“This yatra is not just political; it is a people’s mission to restore harmony and raise the voice of farmers, workers, youth, traders and women,” he said.
According to the organisers, the yatra’s logo reflects Haryana’s identity and collective strength.
The logo features two rising hands — orange symbolizing valour and sacrifice, and green representing agriculture and prosperity — celebrating the land of Jawan and Kisan.
At the centre is the Congress hand enclosed within the tricolour circle signifying harmony, inclusivity and unity, the organisers said at the press meet.
The organisers also said the yatra will spotlight multiple issues including ‘vote chori’ (electoral malpractice), unemployment, paper leaks, agrarian distress, the new army recruitment process and the deterioration of democratic institutions under the BJP.
A 1998-batch IAS officer, Brijendra Singh, voluntarily retired from the civil service to enter politics. He was elected as MP from Hisar in 2019 on a BJP ticket He defeated Dushyant Chautala of the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) by over two lakh votes, as the BJP swept all 10 LS seats in Haryana.
However, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Singh left the BJP and joined the Congress.
He contested the October 2024 Assembly polls from Haryana’s Uchana Kalan constituency but narrowly lost to BJP’s Devender Chatar Bhuj Attri by just 32 votes.
Singh has challenged Attri’s election in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, alleging improper rejection of 215 postal ballots.
