Babulal Marandi is a prominent Indian politician and the first Chief Minister of Jharkhand, serving from 2000 to 2003. Born on January 11, 1958, in Giridih district, Bihar (now in Jharkhand), Marandi's political journey began with grassroots activism and later flourished through his association with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He played a pivotal role in the movement for Jharkhand's statehood, which eventually led to its formation on November 15, 2000.
Marandi's tenure as Jharkhand’s first Chief Minister was marked by efforts to bring development to the newly formed state. He focused on infrastructure, education, and the empowerment of tribal communities, who make up a significant portion of Jharkhand’s population. However, his government faced challenges, including political instability and internal dissent within the BJP.
In 2006, Marandi parted ways with the BJP, citing differences over the party's handling of tribal issues and corruption. He subsequently formed the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) (JVM-P), with the aim of providing an alternative to the state's existing political landscape. His political influence remained significant, though his party struggled to gain major electoral success.
In 2020, Marandi returned to the BJP, merging his party with it and continuing his advocacy for Jharkhand's development. Known for his clean image and focus on social justice, Babulal Marandi remains a key figure in Jharkhand’s political scene, respected for his long-standing commitment to the upliftment of marginalized communities and the overall progress of the state.
