Arjun Singh biography

Arjun Singh's political journey in West Bengal has been marked by unexpected shifts and controversies. Once a prominent figure in the Trinamool Congress (TMC), he switched allegiance to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2019, only to rejoin the TMC in May 2022. Examining his career can be insightful into the complex dynamics of West Bengal politics.

Born in 1962, Singh's political roots lay in the TMC. He began his career as a student leader and rose through the ranks, winning four consecutive assembly elections from Bhatpara constituency between 2001 and 2011. He held various positions within the party, including president of the "Hindi wing" and "State Incharge" for several states.

A crucial turning point came in 2019 when Singh defected to the BJP, citing dissatisfaction with the TMC leadership and alleged corruption within the party. He contested and won the Barrackpore Lok Sabha seat on a BJP ticket, becoming the sole BJP MP from West Bengal at the time.

However, his foray into national politics with the BJP proved short-lived. In 2022, amidst growing speculation about internal conflicts within the BJP's West Bengal unit, Singh made a dramatic return to the TMC. He cited disillusionment with the BJP's leadership and their alleged neglect of West Bengal's development as reasons for his switch.

Singh's political shifts have garnered mixed reactions. His supporters view him as a pragmatic politician who prioritizes development and the welfare of his constituents. Critics, however, accuse him of opportunism and lacking strong ideological convictions. Additionally, his sudden returns have raised questions about his long-term loyalty and political stability.

Notably, despite him being the sitting MP, TMC decided not to give him ticket for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
