Chubby cheeks, dimpled chin, rosy lips . . . did childhood memories just hit you hard? The popular nursery rhyme which had comfortably settled in a cosy corner of your brain long ago, is being revamped and how!
Culture Machine’s lifestyle channel Blush has come up with its take on the nursery rhyme, which on second thoughts, treads the thin line of setting stereotypical standards of beauty. Blush has come together with Dove to make the video as part of the #changetherhyme campaign. The video has now gone viral and for just the right reasons.
Have we all not pictured a lovely girl with blue eyes and dimples on her cheeks when we sang this back in school as well? #Changetherhyme campaign attempts to question what the rhyme that we were reciting all these years is implying — restricting beauty to just the fair skinned, blue eyed and dimple-cheeked.
The thought-provoking video shows female athletes warming up to train for their respective sports, accompanied with the audio of a group of kindergarten students reciting the rhyme. As the video progresses, the intensity of the athletes’ training session increases and along with it the sound of the kids reciting. A lot of us are the nursery kids who are reciting the rhyme in the video, again and again, chanting the same standards of beauty.
