A lot of bizarre statements have come from politicians in India and abroad over the years but few would beat this. Reportedly, during a debate on stray cattle in the state assembly, Haryana’s animal husbandry and dairy minister Om Prakash Dhankar said foreign bulls in Haryana are characterless and even impregnate buffaloes.

Explaining the character of the bulls, he said, “Jaisa wahan ke kai mulko mein character hai, waisa he inka character hai (The bulls have the same character of the countries they come from),” reports The Times of India.

To promote India-bred cows, he went on to call foreign bulls violent and aggressive. “Foreign bulls are more aggressive, they violate more animals (buffaloes as well) because they don’t have the character similar to local bulls. Hamara sand ritugami hai, ye ritugami nahi hai (Our bulls mate only when the female’s estrous cycle is active but foreign bulls don’t care about this),” Dhankar was quoted as saying.

Reportedly, the state has already castrated over 22,000 bulls to control the population of stray cattle and the government intends to further increase the number. He informed others in the assembly that even cowsheds refuse to take these bulls if they are not castrated. He even said that he has spoken to US officials to provide them with a technology to make sure the cattle are cow progeny.

As soon as the minister remarks reached social media, people couldn’t help but mock the his “wisdom”.

Reportedly, during the session, the menace caused by stray cattle was discussed to be curbed by eventually setting up 40 cow sanctuaries.
