Kerala’s Vanitha magazine creates history by featuring a transgender model on its latest cover

Vanitha, a fortnightly Kerala magazine, has featured Deepthi - a transgender model - on the cover of its latest edition, which is being lauded as a bold move towards gender equality.

Most Malayalis remember copies of Vanitha — a popular women’s magazine in Kerala, as hung across a wire in front of tiny tea-shops. Although predominantly a women’s magazine, it comes packed with stories, relationship advice, short stories, recipes etc. for everyone and hence is zealously read by all in the house.

In a first, the latest edition of the fortnightly has created history by featuring Deepthi, a beautiful transgender model. Born as Shinoj, Deepthi is from Guruvayoor. According to OnManorama, the magazine also carries a detailed interview with Deepthi about her transformation and the hurdles she faced while she went through the process.

Through the project, the magazine says it intends to present a changed media attitude by giving equal opportunities to the transgender community. The bold move by the magazine is garnering praises for what is being seen as a milestone achieved in the struggle for equality of all genders.
