At its annual Build conference for developers, Microsoft showcased some new features for Office 365 and Outlook.com. Like with Windows 10, where now developers can brings apps from Android and iOS into Windows 10, Office and Outlook.com are also get extensions and newer APIs.
Microsoft is bringing new open APIs to Office 365 which will allow “developers to develop new integrated experiences that enhance productivity,” says the company. In short, Office will no longer be just Word, Excel and PowerPoint but also a platform with apps that developers can create specifically for each of the applications.
One of the first APIs that Microsoft showcased as the Graph API, which will be useful for those who are working on Excel and data heavy apps. Microsoft also announced “Expanded Office add-in capabilities” and plans to brings apps to Excel for iPad as well. Word and PowerPoint for iPad will be rolled out later.
In addition to this, Outlook.com has got certain extensions as well. These are:
Uber: Users can set an Uber ride reminder for any calendar event, which is useful in case they rely on Outlook.com for their daily calender.
Boomerang: Allows users to write messages and then schedule it for delivery.
PayPal: Send money to friends from the Inbox.
Other APIs that Microsoft has introduced are:
Unified APIs for enterprise and consumers: Standardized set of commercial and consumer APIs in Outlook and Outlook.com, OneNote, OneDrive and OneDrive for Business to make it easier for app developers to access data.
Office 365 Groups API: Developers can now build applications that will use the team collaboration features of Office.
New Skype Developer Platform: New developer tools and opportunities for Skype for Business to allow developers “to create solutions that allow businesses to connect with customers, vendors or partners through a simple Skype button, mobile apps, browser-based chat allowing sharing, audio, video calls and more.”
In addition to this, there will be unified consumer and commercial APIs for OneDrive and OneNote available in Preview.
