Venus Williams came into the final as the overwhelming favourite and the fairy tales suggested she would win her sixth Wimbledon – nearly a decade after her fifth. But Garbine Muguruza – looking for her first Venus Rosewater Dish and second Grand Slam glory – had other ideas. For the most part, Venus challenged and pushed her much younger opponent all the way in the first set. But as things moved on, her energy went away as Muguruza picked up on Venus’ rising error count. The celebrations started after Venus’ groundstroke went long and was adjudged after a review.
