Video: Australian surfer Mick Fanning fends off shark during the 2015 J-Bay Open
Australian surfer Mick Fanning was alert and prompt with his reaction and held on to his board

Three-time world surfing champion Mick Fanning survived a shark attack during the 2015 J-Bay Open heat in South Africa on Sunday. Fanning was easing in the water with his board when a shark came out of nowhere and wagged its tail near the Australian surfer.

Fanning was alert and prompt with his reaction and held on to his board. While it’s not that clear in the video, reports suggest that he punched the massive shark on its back.

After the incident, the J-Bay Open was called off for the day and officials said the athletes are unharmed.
