More than 350 boxers, including members of the Indian team for the South Asian Games to be held in Dhaka from January 29,who gathered in Mumbai for the Super Cup have expressed their displeasure at poor accommodation and food arrangements at the Andheri Sports Complex.
Most of us have come from the Commonwealth camp from Patiala and were in surprise on seeing the arrangements. We are not demanding five star arrangements but if the organisers had made arrangements at the Sports Complex, they should have done it properly. We have been given folding beds and there was no one to tell us about the stay arrangements. Some of us had to even share beds, said one of the boxers who didn’t wish to be named.
Most of the core group boxers stay at NIS ,Patiala, and live in hostels for the major part of the year. While Asian champion Suranjoy Singh will be the main attraction of the annual event, boxers like Manpreet Singh,Amandeep Singh and Chote Lal Yadav have also been practising at the Sports Complex,as part of the training camp for the SAF Games. We all are used to attending camps and we have never complained about basic facilities. But we do need proper rest and lodging facilities when we play in tournaments. We were waiting for more than two hours for officials to contact us but they said we have arrived early, said another boxer.
Meanwhile, the organisers said the problem occurred as the boxers showed up two days ahead of the reporting date. “Tuesday was the reporting day for the boxers but they landed couple of days ago. So,we were not prepared for that but now from today onwards we will have all the arrangements in place and the boxers will have no problem.” said Jay Kowli, the organising in-charge and MBA secretary general Jay Kowli.
The inter-zonal tournament is also a selection trial for the Commonwealth Boxing Championships to be held in the Capital in March.
