Punjab Congress President Partap Singh Bajwa Monday held the RSS responsible for the alleged desecration incidents resulting in “communal upsurge” in the state.

Bajwa, who credited AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi as an architect of the Grand Alliance’s victory in Bihar, said RSS was saffronising Punjab keeping the 2017 elections in mind.

“RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat had made several visits to Punjab this year and held closed door meetings with religious preachers. Whatever took place in Punjab recently was the outcome of a bid to polarise Punjab. RSS had a direct hand in the events that unfolded,” he said.

“But we will not allow anybody to disturb the peace and harmony in the state. Rahul will meet the President of India after Diwali, along with state Congress leaders, to demand a time-bound judicial probe into the incidents, so that the true culprit can be brought to book,” he said.

RSS sahsanchalak, Punjab, Brig (retd.) JK Gagneja, refused to react on Bajwa’s allegation. “India is a democratic country. Anybody can say anything to anyone. It has become a common trend to bash RSS and Hindu Samaj. Why should we explain? Bajwa is trying to please his boss,” he said.

Gagneja said Bhagwat’s visits were a routine affair. “He will keep coming. Do we say anything when Rahul visits Punjab?” he said.

Bajwa, meanwhile, said all secular parties in Punjab will have to form a grand alliance to defeat communal forces like SAD and BJP. Refusing to give details, he said: “It is too early to say anything.”
