A day after a landslide victory in the Lok Sabha elections, state BJP leaders said the spotlight will now turn to Delhi where efforts will be made for early Assembly polls.
Leaders said a lot will depend on what happens to Delhi BJP chief Harsh Vardhan who got elected MP from Chandni Chowk.
Harsh Vardhan, who was the party’s CM candidate in the last Assembly elections, is also MLA from Krishna Nagar. Two other MLAs — Ramesh Bidhuri (Tughlakabad) and Parvesh Sahib Singh (Mehrauli) — have also been elected to Lok Sabha.
BJP sources said there are indications that Harsh Vardhan may get a ministerial berth at the Centre. The sources said he will return to Delhi whenever Assembly elections are held. One leader said Harsh Vardhan’s future role has already been discussed at length.
“It is important for us to win Delhi. People of Delhi accepted Harsh Vardhan as the face of the BJP in the last Assembly elections. If he finds place in the Council of Ministers, it will add to his stature. He can always be brought back to Delhi at a future date,” the leader said. Harsh Vardhan declined comment.
Another BJP leader said the Assembly elections will be “tricky” since the AAP continues to put up a fight — candidates of the AAP finished second in all seven Lok Sabha constituencies.
“People seem disillusioned with the AAP but it is difficult to gauge the mood of the Delhi voter. But it appear the Assembly polls will happen soon. We need a credible leader in Delhi,” the leader said.
