Yakub Memon files fresh mercy petition before President; Supreme Court to decide on his execution today

Yakub Memon's curative petition, filed by his brother on his behalf, was previously rejected by the president in May.

A day before his hanging, Yakub Memon on Wednesday filed a fresh mercy petition before President Pranab Mukherjee. A curative petition, filed on behalf of Yakub by his brother, was previously rejected by the president in May.

A three-judge Supreme Court bench is also set to decide on Yakub’s fate today after it was referred to a larger bench following a split verdict by Justices Anil R Dave and Kurian Joseph.

The two judges differed on various aspects of the case and even refused to arrive at a consensus on staying the death sentence awarded to Yakub.
