The Khammam Urban Police have registered a case of cheating against Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury. This comes after the High Court in Hyderabad gave a direction on a petition filed by B Kalavathi, widow of Dr Bhukya Ramachandra Naik, a surgeon and Congress supporter from Wyra in Khammam District. Kalavathi has alleged that Chowdhury took Rs 1.10 crore from her husband, promising to get him a ticket to contest from Wyra Assembly constituency during last year’s elections.
Kalavathi alleged that the ticket was not allotted to her husband and when he sought the money back, Chowdhury refused to return it. She said her husband had borrowed the money to pay Chowdhury, and was under immense pressure to repay the debts, which led to his untimely death last November at the age of 48.
In the 2014 elections, the Congress had an alliance with the CPI, which was allotted the Wyra seat. In the 2009 elections, Naik, who ran the Sri Harshini Nursing Home in Khammam town, contested on a Congress ticket but lost to the CPI candidate.
Kalavathi alleged in her complaint that after her husband’s death, when she met Chowdhury and sought the money back, she not only denied taking the money but also abused her on the basis of her caste.
“We have also added the SC/ST Atrocities Act. The investigation will be handed over to an officer of the rank of deputy SP. The complainant stated that her husband paid Rs 1.10 crore to Chowdhury on May 30, 2013, 11 months before elections were held on April 30 last year,” inspector Sridhar Kumar of Khammam Urban police station said on Saturday.
Chowdhury, a Rajya Sabha member, issued a statement denying the allegations. “These allegations are baseless. I never met this woman, who is making all these accusations. They appear to be politically motivated,” she said.
