PM: 10 lakh houses for poor in 4 yrs to rid India of slums

The PM was in Chandigarh to hand over 8,448 one-room tenements in Dhanas village.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday said his government aims to provide 10 lakh houses to the poor under the Rajiv Gandhi Awas Yojna in the next four years. The aim is to have a slum-free India.

The PM was in Chandigarh to hand over 8,448 one-room tenements in Dhanas village. The PM handed over keys to 10 beneficiaries.

He said 10 crore people live in slums now and their number will rise to 10.4 crore by 2017. Keeping this in mind,the Centre has decided to help state governments solve this problem,he added.
