MP cop faces arrest over prof suicide

The family members alleged that the police official forced her to undergo abortion thrice, and that he used to threaten them.

A police official is likely to be arrested for allegedly abetting suicide of an assistant professor, 22 years younger than him, at a rented flat here.

Upmanyu Saxena, 54, was suspended on Monday, a day after 32-year-old Indu Sharma’s body was found hanging at the flat in Misrod area on the city’s outskirts, with her family alleging that the police inspector posted at the Inspector General’s office was harassing her.

It was Saxena who alerted the police about the suicide when he reached the flat on Sunday, but her family alleged the police official could have eliminated her as the two fought on the previous night.

Bhopal (Range) DIG Srinivas Varma said Saxena was booked for abetment to suicide based on the allegations leveled by family members of Sharma, who was an assistant professor at a private college here.

Investigating Officer Anil Shukla has ruled out murder. “We are collecting evidence on the allegations of harassment that might have led her to commit suicide,’’ he said.

The family members alleged that the police official forced her to undergo abortion thrice, and that he used to threaten them.
