At least eight people were electrocuted and several others injured when high-tension power lines fell on a group of people travelling in a truck near Narayankhed circle of Medak district late Sunday evening. The group was returning from a wedding at Deviliwada Thanda in Narayankhed taluka to Nandiwada in Nizamabad district.
Medak SP B Sumathi, who was rushing to the spot, said that at least 15 had received serious burn injuries. “They were initially shifted to a hospital in Narayankhed. Doctors said their condition was serious, so we rushed them to Yashoda Hospital in Secunderabad,” he added.
“One minute, the relatives and friends of the newly married couple were singing songs and dancing in the back of the truck and the next minute there were horrific screams as high-tension wires fell on the truck near Narayankhed junction. The incident occurred around 8 pm,’’ Assistant Sub-Inspector Narayan Reddy of Kangti police station said quoting witnesses on the highway.

“Several people in other vehicles stopped and tried to help the victims, but those eight persons were charred on the spot. It appears that some members of the group were carrying battery-operated lights, which came in contact with the high-tension lines. The lines got stuck, snapped and fell, electrocuting the people on the truck,” an official said.
Officials said that at least 40 relatives and friends had gone to Nandiwada on Saturday morning to attend Raj Kumar’s wedding. The ceremony concluded late Saturday night and the reception was on Sunday evening, after which the group started off towards Deviliwada Thanda.
The police said some members of the wedding procession were carrying lights on poles attached to batteries, which were used during the marriage ceremony and reception. As the high-tension lines snapped, they triggered the tripping of lines in several areas, including Hyderabad, causing a blackout for many hours.
