Sandeep Gadoli killing: 5 Gurgaon cops booked for murder, SIT tells SC
Gadoli, who was carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head and was wanted in over 40 FIRs since 1999, was killed in an alleged shootout by the Gurgaon police on February 7 at a hotel in Andheri.

A special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to probe the killing of Gurgaon gangster Sandeep Gadoli in a Mumbai hotel in February this year told the Supreme Court on Friday that five policemen from Gurgaon staged the fake encounter. While police officers of sub-inspector level have been booked now, sources in the SIT told The Indian Express two senior Gurgaon Police officers were also under the scanner.
On February 7, an eight-member Gurgaon Crime Branch team came to Mumbai to arrest Gadoli, who they claimed had nearly 30 cases against him. They entered the airport metro hotel in Andheri, where Gadoli was staying. The Gurgaon Police had claimed on entering his room, when they asked Gadoli to surrender, he had fired at them. The officers claimed to have fired shots in self-defence, killing Gadoli.
PSI Pradhuman Yadav, who led the raiding team, then lodged a complaint against Gadoli at the local MIDC police station on attempt to murder charges. The case aroused suspicion as the local police had not been informed before the raid. The case was then transferred to the SIT led by ACP Avdut Chavan.

The SIT team, as reported by The Indian Express last month, had found CCTV footage showing the policemen standing and watching for nearly 20 minutes without going to the gangster’s aid even as he writhed in pain after being shot.
Following a three-month investigation, the SIT told the Supreme Court bench comprising Justice Prafulla C Pant and Justice D Y Chandrachud on Friday, “The investigation carried out so far disclosed that the FIR lodged by the first informant PSI Yadav is (a) false one. The alleged encounter (is) found to be (a) fake one. It is disclosed that the first informant and his four associates in conspiracy with others killed the accused (Gadoli) and staged the fake encounter.”
The SIT also informed the Supreme Court of having altered the original sections, including those of attempt to murder against Gadoli, and instead invoked the charges of murder, destruction of evidence, punishment for false evidence, giving false information to public servant, conspiracy along with relevant sections of the Arms Act against the five policemen and three others.
Jyotsna Giulia, Gadoli’s sister, while saying she was happy with the development, alleged other senior officers too were involved and should be booked. “The small fish have been booked but the bigger fish are still away,” she told The Indian Express.
News agencies reported that the vacation bench directed the investigation by the SIT to continue and adjourned the matter for further hearing on July 13.
The court will also hear a plea by Gadoli’s brother Kuldeep Singh, who has sought an investigation by a judicial magistrate.
