Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch will hold a condolence meet on November 5 and 6 to pay tributes to former Goa Chief Minister Shashikala Kakodkar. Kakodkar passed away on October 28 after prolonged illness. She was 81.
She was heading the BBSM since its inception in 2011 to oppose the decision of then Digambar Kamat-led government in the state to give grants to English medium schools. “The condolence meeting would be held on November 5 in Panaji and on November 6 in Margao. All the well wishers of Kakodkar are invited to attend these meetings,” BBSM convener Subhash Velingkar told PTI on Sunday.
Kakodkar became the Chief Minister of Goa, Daman and Diu union territories in the year 1973 after death of her father, while still in office. The father-daughter duo were Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party leaders. She continued to rule the union territories till 1979 when she was ousted by a split within her party.
In the recent years, she was associated with BBSM, a front which has been a crusader of mother tongue as medium of instruction in elementary education.
