Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has put a stop to the state’s plan to procure two high-end bulletproof vehicles for the use of the Governor and the Chief Minister in Delhi.
Last week, the state had passed an order approving Rs 1.4 crore for the two vehicles for Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao and Fadnavis.
These vehicles were to be placed in Delhi and used exclusively when they visited the capital.
The Chief Minister’s Office has, however, come out with a statement that on the directions of the CM, the state would purchase only one vehicle. The state has also decided to opt for the cheaper of the two cars.
The state decided to procure these vehicles after a request in February this year. Last week, the Maharashtra General Administration Department (GAD) gave a go-ahead to the deal and specified a bulletproof Mercedes Benz E350 for the Governor and a Toyota Fortuner for the Chief Minister in its order. The state will now buy only the latter, which is cheaper.
“In view of the security requirements, bulletproof vehicles are necessary for both the CM and the Governor when they visit Delhi. However, as the number of such vehicles with the Delhi Police is limited, many times, these are not made available,” the earlier order had stated.
