Kolkata flyover collapse: 3 IVRCL officials held on murder charges

Kolkata police team issued notices to the company directors to appear before the probe team in Kolkata within a week.

Kolkata Police Friday arrested three top officials of the Hyderabad-based firm which was constructing the flyover that collapsed Thursday leaving 25 dead, and slapped murder charges on them, a senior officer said. Seven other officials of IVRCL who had been detained Thursday along with the three for questioning continue to be in custody, the officer said.

Meanwhile, a Kolkata Police team conducted searches at the head office of IVRCL in Hyderabad Friday. It also issued notices to the company directors to appear before the probe team in Kolkata within a week.

The state government has suspended a chief engineer and an executive engineer of Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority, which had entered into a joint venture with IVRCL for constructing the flyover.

The three arrested — assistant manager Debjyoti Majumdar, assistant general manager Mallikaarjun and structure manager Pradip Kumar Saha — face charges under IPC Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) among others. They will be produced before a court Saturday. Police had Thursday slapped charges against IVRCL under Sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) and 407 (criminal breach of trust by carrier, etc) of the IPC. The firm’s Kolkata office has been sealed.

“Nobody alive has been rescued… Two mangled auto rickshaws and a few other vehicles have been pulled out,” said DIG, NDRF, Surjeet Singh Guleria. He said the rescue operation was “nearly over”. With PTI inputs.
