Kanhaiya Kumar withdraws from JNU hunger strike as it enters day 10

Five of the 19 students, who went on a hunger strike on April 28 to protest the punishment meted out to them over their alleged involvement in the February 9 incident, have ended their fast.

As the indefinite hunger strike by JNU students entered its 10th day Saturday, JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar withdrew from the strike due to medical reasons, a day after he was treated at AIIMS for mild dehydration and ketosis.

Five of the 19 students, who went on a hunger strike on April 28 to protest the punishment meted out to them over their alleged involvement in the February 9 incident, have ended their fast.

Meanwhile, a day after the JNU administration issued an “appeal against inviting outsiders” for events on campus, hundreds of alumni, students and teachers formed a human chain in support of the protesting students.

The chain stretched from Ganga Dhaba near the JNU main gate to the administrative block, where the students have been holding the strike.

Umar Khalid, Rama Naga and Shweta Raj — who are still on hunger strike — joined the chain and raised slogans.
Khalid, who is facing sedition charge over the February 9 event, was Saturday granted permission by a Delhi court to travel to Kolkata to attend a panel discussion.

“I will visit Kolkata on May 21 for a few days to attend a programme organised by the Bastar Solidarity Network,” he said.
