J&K police detains Engineer Rashid for waving black flags before PM arrived in valley

Rashid had earlier threatened to welcome, PM Modi with black flags against the growing intolerance against the Muslims in India.

The police arrested independent legislator from North Kashmir’s Langate constituency, Engineer Rashid along with his supporters at Jawahar Nagar when he tried to take out a protest against PM Narendra Modi’s Srinagar visit.

Rashid had earlier threatened to welcome, PM Modi with black flags against the growing intolerance against the Muslims in India.

In the morning, along with dozens of his supporters, independent legislator tried to take out protest rally, however, he was detained and taken to Rajbagh police station. Before arrest, Rashid and his supporters managed to release 1000 black balloons in the air.

Engineer Rashid told The Indian Express that he was assaulted by the police and his two supporters suffered injuries when they were beaten by the police. “This is a police state, when I tried to take out a protest rally along with my supporters, the policemen dragged us and three of my workers suffered injuries and one worker has been hospitalised.’’ Rashid said that he was not even allowed to walk few hundred meters. “But, we managed to register a symbolic protest by releasing black balloons in the air.’’
