The government is aiming to include states in the festivities with a ‘Showcasing of States’ as is done during Republic Day — but without the parade and flypasts.

Prepare for a bigger bash this August 15. The NDA government is planning to hold a fortnight-long celebration “to create a festive and patriotic mood across nation and involvement of the general public in Independence Day Celebrations”.

While the main function would be held at Red Fort, with the Prime Minister hoisting the Tricolour and delivering the customary speech, the public outreach would start from August 1 with concerts by the Services band and a display of military assets across the nation until August 14 — as was done for the first time last year.

This time, the Narendra Modi government’s plan is to bring Independence Day celebrations closer to the Republic Day model that honours the President. The government is aiming to include states in the festivities with a ‘Showcasing of States’ as is done during Republic Day — but without the parade and flypasts.

“With the objective of larger participation of people in the event, Showcasing of States is proposed to be held on the pattern of the function held during the Republic Day Celebrations 2016,” states a government document.

To be held from August 12-17, the objective is to extend the participation of states from merely staging tableaus to include folk performances by local artists, shows by celebrities, display of art and culture, and dissemination of information on their governance initiatives.

They will also be allowed to hold state-specific food festivals and set up handicrafts stalls at the venue during the six days. Opposite these stalls, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting plans to screen “patriotic films” from August 12-15.

The Defence Ministry, which organises the Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations, has also decided to illuminate Connaught Place, major roundabouts and government buildings in the national capital. However, due to security reasons, it did not advocate flypasts over Red Fort or fireworks at Rajpath.
