One person was shot dead and three police personnel received injuries during firing between alleged cow smugglers and police at Mahendragarh district in Haryana late Tuesday night.
The incident took place on Kanina road in the district at around 11 pm. Police got a tip off about alleged smuggling of cows and intercepted the vehicle. As soon as the police reached close to the vehicle, they were faced with firing.
As the police fired, one of the alleged smugglers died while the others managed to escape.
The Haryana government, last year, passed Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakshan and Gausamvardhan Act under which cow slaughter was made punishable for upto 10 years in prison.
Haryana police also launched a 24-hour helpline number in July to curb the incidents of cow smuggling/slaughter by receiving information of such incidents from the people.
The incidents of cow vigilantism or ‘gau raksha’ are also rampant in the state as two people were forced to consume ‘panchgavya’, cow dung concoction, after they were allegedly caught transporting beef in Faridabad, Haryana.
