Computer Science remains the highest paying discipline

Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) graduates continued to record the highest median salary packages across all three years. In 2022-23, the median cost-to-company (CTC) stood at Rs 30.36 lakh. This figure rose sharply to Rs 37.50 lakh in 2023-24, with the average package reaching Rs 52.32 lakh. For 2024-25, the upward trend persisted, as the median climbed further to Rs 46 lakh and the average touched Rs 53.2 lakh, marking CSE as the consistently top-earning BTech discipline at IIT Madras.

While salary growth moderated in 2024-25 after a sharp jump the previous year, the figures remained substantially above other branches. The moderation aligns with broader adjustments in the global technology sector.

Electrical Engineering followed with medians between Rs 21–25 lakh across the three years, while core branches like Mechanical, Civil, and Chemical Engineering recorded medians in the Rs 15–17 lakh range, indicating steady market demand.

The placement data suggests that while technology-oriented branches continue to dominate high-end salary brackets, core disciplines have maintained consistent outcomes. Chemical and Civil Engineering showed steady year-on-year growth, likely driven by expansion in renewable energy, infrastructure, and manufacturing sectors.

Mechanical, Metallurgical, and Aerospace Engineering demonstrated stable placements, reflecting sustained though moderate compensation trends in traditional engineering domains.

Across all programmes, minimum offers generally ranged between Rs 6 and 9 lakh, while top packages, especially for CSE students, crossed Rs 1 crore in multiple years.

Sector-wise recruitment patterns: Which were the top domains?

Information Technology and Software Development continued to account for the largest share of total placements. However, IIT Madras placement data across the three years shows growing diversification of hiring sectors:

Engineering & Technology: Companies in manufacturing, automotive, and aerospace continued steady hiring.

Data Science & Analytics: Rapid growth observed across multiple departments beyond CSE, including Electrical and Mathematics.

Financial Services & Consulting: Consistent presence of firms offering roles in quantitative research, financial engineering, and analytics.

Research & Development: Strong representation from semiconductor, EV, and materials research firms.

Top recruiters across the three years

Recruiting data shows consistent participation from major global and domestic firms. Top technology recruiters included Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Adobe, while Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, and Deutsche Bank were among leading financial sector employers.

Core and manufacturing firms such as Airbus, Siemens, Mercedes-Benz R&D, and Bajaj Auto continued to engage actively, alongside newer entrants from electric vehicle, AI, and space technology startups.

The growing share of startup recruiters in 2023-24 and 2024-25 highlighted an increasing preference among students for high-impact roles in emerging industries.

Internship and PPO trends at IIT Madras

Internship participation at IIT Madras has expanded significantly. In 2022-23, over 778 internship offers were made by 140+ companies, up from 376 offers in 2018-19. Median internship stipends varied by department at Rs 1.3 lakh per month for CSE, Rs 60,000 for Electrical, and Rs 40,000 to Rs 65,000 for core branches.

Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs) have risen sharply: 350 PPOs were made in 2022-23, compared to 117 in 2017-18. This growth indicates companies’ increasing reliance on internships as long-term evaluation channels before full-time hiring.

Career pathways beyond placements

While most BTech students opt for direct placements, a significant number pursue higher studies or entrepreneurial ventures, as per the institute’s placement reports. Graduates from science-intensive departments, including Physics and Chemistry (in integrated programs), often move toward research-based careers.
