Chandigarh: Passengers complain of insecure toilets in ISBT, filth on railway tracks

Light bulbs and latches are missing in some of the toilets in Sector 43 Bus Stand.

Commuters at the Inter-State Bus Terminals (ISBT) in Sector 17 and Sector 43 are welcomed by litter and unhygienic surroundings. Stinking toilets and an ill-maintained building point to the apathy of the official concerned.

Referring to the Sector 17 bus stand, Diksha Kapur says, “The toilets lacks sanitation”. Ruby Jain, a student expresses concern regarding woman safety while attending to the call of nature. “Is is extremely scary as anyone can peep inside. The latches in some of windows are also missing,” she said.

The toilets also lack proper lighting which adds to the concern of the public at late night. A visit to Sector 43 Bus Stand reveals that light bulbs and latches are missing in some of the toilets.

HP Singh of Sulabh International, the NGO which looks after the cleanliness, stated that there are nearly 100 workers for both bus stands combined.

Chandigarh Railway Station, which is being developed as world class railway station, also fails to impress when it comes to cleanliness. Platform number 1 is comparatively cleaner than the other platforms while the tracks are flooded with garbage. Ram Singh, a commuter says, “The tracks next to these platforms are dirtier”. Station Master T P Singh adds, “All the platforms are clean. The use of granite flooring on platform 1 gives it a more cleaner look”.
