BJP leader arrested for allegedly molesting 13-year-old on Ahmedabad-bound flight

A special POCSO court on Tuesday sent BJP leader Ashok Makwana, 41, to police custody till June 2 in connection with the alleged molestation of a 13-year-old girl. On May 29, the girl’s parents had lodged an FIR against Makwana for allegedly molesting her onboard a Goa-Ahmedabad IndiGo flight.

The special court ordered the police to wrap up the identification parade and other formalities during the custody. The police had sought Makwana’s five days remand. Earlier in the day, the Sardarnagar police arrested Makwana in Gandhinagar. A labour contractor, Makwana has been associated with the BJP for long. Sardarnagar police station lodged the FIR, following the complaint by the girl’s father, who works at a private bank. Police said the girl was returning from Goa where she had gone to meet her relatives. She was alone onboard the flight and Makwana was travelling beside her. Police said that Makwana had a different seat which he exchanged from a friend, who was travelling with him.

According to Sardarnagar police inspector V R Patel, from the list of passengers who were onboard the flight that day, Makwana’s name was found out. During investigation, it was found that Makwana sat next to the girl. The girl told her parents about her alleged ordeal following which her father lodged an FIR.

Makwana has been booked under section 354-A of IPC (sexual harassment) and sections 11 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. During the hearing in the POCSO court, Makwana’s lawyer Soeb Bhohariya refuted the allegation and said that “Makwana was suffering from air sickness and was sleeping during the entire journey”.

President of BJP’s Gandhinagar unit Mahendra Patel confirmed Makwana’s association with the BJP. “Makwana was offered the post of vice-president of the city unit recently, but he declined, citing his busy schedule. At present, he is not holding any post in the party,” he said. State BJP general secretary K C Patel assured action against Makwana. “ The party has taken cognizance of the issue and we will take action against him,” he said.
