Adil Hussain, who was last seen as Sridevi’s husband in English Vinglish, has a slate of films lined up for release this year. He will be seen playing ACP Amod Kant in Prawaal Raman’s Main Aur Charles that releases this October or November. “Amod Kant, who is still alive, was in charge of the area where Charles Sobhraj operated as a criminal,” said the actor.
Besides, this mainstream commercial film, Hussain has another small but important role in Nanak Shah Fakir, a biopic on the revered Saint Guru Nanak, directed by Sartaj Singh Pannu, who had earlier made a short film titled Soch Lo.
Says Hussain, “When Sartaj got in touch with me, I was not sure how authentic it would be in terms of research as the film was on a great entity like Nanaksahab. I was initially offered a bigger role, but due to unavailability of dates, I now play Rai Bhullar, a rich man who is Nanaksahab’s constant companion. It is interesting since my character will be seen aging from 35 to 85 years, something that I have never done before.”
The film, says the actor, has been shot at various locations in Ladakh, Pune, and a location near Chandigarh. In fact, an entire village was constructed to recreate Guru Nanak’s birth place, Nanakpeer which is now in Pakistan. While Pannu has desisted from showing the saint’s face, he has cleverly used the silhouette and the hand of the actor who plays the role of Guru Nanak in the film. “Harish Khanna, my batch mate at National School of Drama, plays the role of Nanaksahab, but in the entire film, one can only see his silhouette, hand and hear his voice while giving sermons.”
Hussain will also be seen in an Indo-French production, Sunrise which is directed by Partho Sengupta of Let The Wind Blow fame. The film shows the trauma of a father whose daughter was kidnapped 12 years ago. “It is a psychological-emotional journey of a father who has lost his daughter and doesn’t know what has happened to her,” explains Hussain, who will also be seen in Feast of Varanasi, a British production, with Suraj Sharma, Danis Tanovic’s White Lies in which he plays the antagonist and shares screen space with Emraan Hashmi, Z Plus, a political satire about the turmoil that is created in the life of a common man when he is given Z security. Currently in post-production, the film, directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, is slated to release by the year end. “I hope people don’t get bored watching me so often on screen,” laughs Hussain.
