Popular Assam singer and musician Zubeen Garg – often described as the heart-throb of the younger generation – was on Friday sentenced to three months rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 after a court here held him guilty of slapping a minor boy three years ago.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court here held the singer guilty under Sections 323 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code, but gave him the opportunity to appeal to a higher court. “We are definitely going to a higher court,” his lawyer Jonmani Neog said. While Section 323 of the IPC refers to voluntarily causing hurt to a person and can imprison a person found guilty up to one year, Section 506 of the IPC deals with criminal intimidation.

Zubeen Garg, who often hits headlines for his typical unusual acts, had in 2013 allegedly slapped a minor son in a public place here, following which his father Arup Borbora, a senior lawyer of the state, lodged an FIR with the police. A day later Borbora filed another FIR complaining that the singer had revealed the name of the victim in some local TV news channels, which again is against the laws that protect the rights of the child.

While the boy’s father expressed satisfaction over the CJM’s court verdict meting out three months rigorous imprisonment, singer Garg was seen on local TV news channels describing it as a “minor matter” and said of his lawyers would take care of the future plan of action.
