Depp’s romance with his Rum Diary co-star Amber Heard,27,is said to be the cause behind his split with Paradis but in an interview to Rolling Stone magazine the actor reveals that things were not going well between him and the French actress for a while.

“The last couple years have been a bit bumpy. At times, certainly unpleasant, but that’s the nature of breakups,I guess, especially when there are kiddies involved. Relationships are very difficult. Especially in the racket that I’m in because you’re constantly away or they’re away and so it’s hard. It wasn’t easy on her. It wasn’t easy on me. It wasn’t easy on the kids. So,yeah. The trajectory of that relationship — you play it out until it goes, one thing leads to another,” Depp said.

The Lone Ranger star believes his children have been “incredibly understanding, incredibly strong” about the split.

Depp, who appears on the cover page of the magazine, also spoke about his desire to retire from acting someday.
