Salman Khan furnishes personal surety in 2002 hit-and-run case

Salman Khan's manager, Reshma Shetty appeared in court and signed as the actor's personal surety on Wednesday (May 20), in relation to his involvement in the 2002 hit-and-run case.

Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s manager, Reshma Shetty appeared in court and signed as the actor’s personal surety on Wednesday (May 20), in relation to his involvement in the 2002 hit-and-run case.

The actor arrived in court, along with his manager and lawyers at 12:05 to sign the bond papers, after the Bombay High Court had directed him to do so on May 8.

In a major relief to actor Bombay High Court had granted him bail in the case, suspending the five-year sentence by the sessions court. He now has to furnish personal surety within two weeks.

Salman Khan was convicted on May 6 on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the 2002 hit-and-run case in which one man died and four were injured. The men were sleeping on a pavement in suburban Bandra when Khan’s Toyota Land Cruiser ran over them.

Reshma Shetty, who has not missed a hearing of the 2002 hit-and-run trial, agreed to be the actor’s personal guarantee in court.

“The high court had directed Khan to furnish the bond,” said advocate Mundargi who was present in Court for the actor on Wednesday.

Explaining the need for a personal surety, Mundargi said, “the court generally directs the accused to furnish such a bond. In circumstances when the accused is absconding or fails to appear in court, the personal surety person is held accountable for the accused and takes it upon himself to ensure the accused’s presence.”

The court will now hear the matter on June 15, when it will give directions regarding the hearing of Khan’s appeal against the conviction in July.
