From Congress backyard, Rahul roars at Modi and Mamata: All talk, no implementation

The Congress Vice President also targeted the Trinamool Congres supremo over corruption in the state in the light of the Sarada scam and the Narada sting operation against her party leaders.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Monday launched a dual attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing the two of only “making promises”, but never “fulfiling them”.

Rahul slammed Trinamool Congress supremo over corruption in the state in the light of the Saradha scam and the Narada sting operation against her party leaders. “Mamata ji had promised to wipe out corruption in the state. But when corruption took place in front of her, she took no action,” Gandhi said addressing election rallies in Raghunathgunj and Kandi in Murshidabad district.

Drawing a parallel with PM Modi, who promised to “bring back black money”, but doesn’t act “against Vijay Mallya (liquor baron) or Lalit Modi (former Indian Premier League chairman)”, Rahul said Mamata too promised to take action in the Vivekanada flyover collapse incident. However, he alleged, she “failed to act in the last five years when her own men were constructing this flyover using spurious material”.

Referring to the Narada sting operation against Trinamool leaders as well as the Saradha scam, he said no action was taken by her against her own leaders who were caught taking bribes on camera. “During election time now, Mamataji said she will take action but why no action was taken earlier,” he said during a rally.

Murshidabad is a traditional Congress bastion, where party state president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has reigned undefeated from the Bahrampur parliamentary constituency since 1999.

Rahul said Mamata’s inability to keep her promises prompted the Congress to fight against her in the ongoing Assembly polls. “Five years back Congress had supported TMC as Mamataji promised to bring poriborton (change), usher in development, give employment to the youth and improve law and order. We supported her on the condition that she will work to change Bengal…Once the polls ended and Mamata became the chief minister, the very next day she changed. Her working style changed, her way of talking changed and she forgot all her promises she made to Congress and people of Bengal,” he said.

“Mamataji had promised to set up factories and provide jobs to the youth who are going to other states. But no factories were set up. So we did not support her. We are fighting to defeat her,” Rahul said.

Attacking the PM, he said Modi ji had coined the ‘Make in India’ slogan with a promise that 2 crore youths will get employment, but there were no signs of that. “People believed him and brought him to power, but not a single youth got a job… The same goes for Mamata. She promised to give employment to 70 lakh people. But is there a single youth who got a job? Instead, they had to migrate to other states in search of livelihood,” he said

Rahul also charged that both Modi and Mamata did not do anything for the farmers. “Mamata calls herself a leader of the poor, but did not bother to implement the Food Security Act despite the then UPA government providing funds to the state,” he said.

Referring to the Congress-Left alliance, Rahul said, “When our alliance government will come after the election, it will take action against those who were indulged in corruption, who were involved in Saradha scam. It will also give employment to the people and help the bidi workers.”

Urging the Congress and Left workers to fight together, Rahul said, “Fight together, I am with you, “adding, “Our government is going to be there”.
