The BMC has recorded a pass percentage of 77.5 among its 145 secondary schools. The percentage has risen by five since 2015. A total of 32 students scored above 90 per cent. This year, the exam pattern and marking scheme were the same as the previous year’s, but the board appointed external examiners for science practicals. Dattatreya Jagtap, chairman, Mumbai Divisional Board, MSBSHSE, said the drop in the percentage was because students were not prepared for this.

However, school principals disagreed. “The poor pass percentage has nothing to do with practicals. It’s because some students do not take exams seriously owing to the no-detention policy,” said Jean Gomes, principal of Michael High School, Kurla. “The board should be stricter about promoting students till Class IX.”

In a first, the board conducted also held aptitude tests to help students choose the right field in future. The board evaluated 15,62,248 students in 21,153 schools. Students can check their aptitude test results on http://www.ivgs.ac.in. The results will also be given to students along with their marksheets on June 15 after 3pm in their respective schools.

“The aptitude test is a good initiative. Unless students consider the results seriously, its purpose will not be served,” said Minhaj Siddiqui, principal of Anjuman-I-Islam All Girls Urdu School in Kurla. In Mumbai, results of 18 students were withheld as they had been caught cheating. They can retake the exam after a year. Verification of marks will begin on June 7 and go on till June 16. Students will have to pay Rs 50 per subject for it. To get a copy of their corrected answer sheets, students can apply between June 7 and 26 by paying Rs 400 per subject. Students can also call the helplines — 022 27893756 and 27881075 — for clarifications.
