Pune: 3 cases of online fraud filed, cops make arrests

Three separate cases of online frauds were registered under sections of Information Technology Act in Pune city on Wednesday. In all the three cases, the victims were duped on the pretext of some type of advanced fee for attractive gifts or lotteries.

There have been several incidences of such frauds registered in the city recently, where advanced fee on some pretext is taken from the victims.

The Pune Police have also cracked some of these cases and made arrests, including those of foreign nationals.

The first case registered on Wednesday has been filed Thergaon resident Tushar Kulkarni (41), who was contacted by a person who introduced himself as identified Harris Johnson, in August last year.

Kulkarni was told that he had been chosen for a lucky draw with a prize money of Rs 3.35 crore.

In coming months, Kulkarni paid Rs 14.8 lakh on various pretexts, like processing fees and duties.

During the same time period, he was contacted by some other persons who told him that he had won a prize of GBP

2,50,000 and was made to pay Rs 9.13 lakh on similar pretexts.

Kulkarni approached Wakad police recently after he realised that he had been duped.

In the second case, Vadgaon resident Sheri (38) was approached by a man who identified himself as Frank Dominique from Scotland, through Facebook on May 12.

She was told that she was selected from a draw and she will be given a gift comprising gold and diamond jewellry, and electronic gadgets.

She was made to pay Rs 1 lakh. She had approached Yerawada police after not receiving any gift on the promised date.

Similarly, a 40-year-old woman resident of Dahanukar Colony was duped to the tune of Rs 1.17 lakh for getting a parcel of valuables. She was contacted by one Harry Cane in March and was also promised a gift.
