H1N1 virus claims 4 more lives, toll 143 in state

A total of 1,195 persons have been successfully treated and discharged from various hospitals.

A total of four deaths due to swine flu (H1N1 virus) were registered here on Sunday. While three deaths were registered by the Pune Municipal Corporation, one was recorded by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation.

Rajendra Vaikar (51) from Vimannagar, who was being treated for diabetes and hypertension, had flu-like symptoms and suffered from fever, cough and weakness. Admitted to Ruby Hall Clinic on February 27, he died on March 1 due to community-acquired pneumonia H1N1 and multi-organ failure.

In another case, Neelam Sharma (58) from Ahmedabad had cough with expectoration since February 11. She was undergoing treatment for hypertension and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. She was admitted to Sahyadri Hospital on February 16 on Nagar Road, but died of septic shock with multi-organ failure late on February 28.

From Shukrawar Peth area, 51-year-old Pravina Shah had a cold, cough and sore throat since February 16. She had travelled from Surat to Pune and was admitted on February 22 at Poona Hospital. She also had an associated illness — ASD closure — and was undergoing treatment. She however succumbed to swine flu-related pneumonia and septic shock late on February 28.

In the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation area, 55-year old Atiya Shaikh from Khadki died on February 28 at Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital due to swine flu. A total of eight deaths have been registered by PCMC since January this year.

Across the state, a total of 143 persons have died due to swine flu this year, while 1,735 persons have been detected with the H1N1 virus.

A total of 1,195 persons have been successfully treated and discharged from various hospitals.
